NFL fans rave over Aussie punter Michael Dickson’s ‘sexy’ kicks in Seahawks win over Patriots

In the second game of the year, the match came down to the final play with the Seahawks holding the Patriots out from the 1 yard line when Cam Newton was stopped from running in a third rushing TD of the game.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was once again in sparkling form, throwing five touchdowns to five different receivers to go 2-0 to start the season while handing the Patriots the first loss of the Newton era.

But while the quarterback battle was the headline, third year Aussie punter Michael Dickson returned to the form that made him a darling of the league in his first season in the NFL.

Dickson went through somewhat of a sophomore slump in 2019 compared to his first season in the league, in which he rewrote the record books.

Dickson was selected for the 2018 Pro Bowl, an All-Star style game featuring the best players in the game, becoming the first rookie punter named to start since LA Rams punter Dale Hatcher in 1985.

Last year his numbers took a dive and despite being called a “punting god” and “the world’s most captivating punter” in his first year as well as floating drop kick field goals as an option and taking a famous run for a first down.

But early indications are that he could be back with a vengeance.

Michael Dickson could be back.

In just four kicks — including a 54-yarder that landed on the two yard line and a 63-yarder that ended up being 76 yards with a New England holding penalty — Dickson once again had Seahawks fans raving.

The first punt came 27 seconds before the end of the half, with Dickson finding the turf and having just the right amount of back spin to stop two yards out.

ESPN Australia’s Laurie Horesh tweeted that Dickson was “bringing a little US Open action to Week 2 of the NFL with a pitch wedge that sits down at the 2-yard line. Sublime.” while reporter Jassamyn McIntyre wrote “Michael Dickson does magical things with the ball”.

NFL Analyst Warren Sharp tweeted that the Seahawks have come a long way when they have more than just Dickson highlights to share.

“Remember when punts downed at the 2 yard line were the most exciting part of Seahawks first halves … back before they let Russ cook,” he wrote.

“I remember Seahawks Twitter going nuts when Dickson hit a good punt and sending out video clips to the timeline … those were the super fun days”.

Michael Dickson just spun a 54-yard punt down to the 2, where it died untouched. That's like holing out a 5-wood from 220 in golf. Give him the respect he deserves— Alex Kirshner (@alex_kirshner) September 21, 2020

I’d like to have Dickson in my scramble foursome. He can kick golf balls close to the hole when we get 150 yards in.— Jesse Jones (@JesseKIRO7) September 21, 2020

But The Athletic’s Seahawks beat writer Michael-Shawn Dugar was a little more excited, calling Dickson “the sexist punter in football”.

That’s how America likes it!

Fans then went nuts again for Dickson’s next kick in the fourth quarter which went out at the Patriots’ 14 yard line before the holding penalty meant the ball went back to the seven yard line.

Dugar added that it was a “Sexy 63 yard punt by Michael Dickson there” while Seattle Pi sports reporter Ben Arthur called it “exquisite”.

CBS Sports writer Tom Fornelli also may have been too excited as well with his take, adding “All this talk about Russell Wilson deserving MVP votes while Michael Dickson is booming 70-yard punts”.

64 yard punt from Dickson, what a stud he’s turned into for this #seahawks punt team. #GoHawks #NEvsSEA pic.twitter.com/7pAXCuwLpX— B (@brandonsblog) September 21, 2020

Swell time for Michael Dickson to unleash a 64-yard punt--plus Patriots called for holding. That is crazy. #Seahawks were punting from their OWN 17. New England is starting for its OWN 7(!)— Gregg Bell (@gbellseattle) September 21, 2020
