Musawengosi Mguni : "I don not play football for money’s sake "

03-12-2009 21:56

Firstly specialist treated swarthy player of Metallurg, whose name and surname were hard-to-pronounce, with scepsis. But when the forward from Zimbabwe started regularly scoring goals, it became clear that Musawengosi Mguni was not a simple player. An annoying injury did not enable him to play three months and his partners said that his absence on the field influenced on the play of the team.

- How do you feel after partly sensational defeat in the match against Obolon? –correspondent of «SE» asked 26 years old forward.

- There is only one answer. The defeat is not a thing to be glad. When you win you feel good and it raises your confidence. But now we have to try to put it out of our heads and be ready for the match against Dnipro.

- The workers of official site of FC Metallurg noticed that if Mguni scores a goal – Metallurg will win. Thus you may be considered as one of talismans of the club?

- Really? (laughs). I knew nothing about it. I do not make much of such facts. Maybe it is only a coincidence, but I think that it is a part of our team spirit.

- Do you like the play with only one forward? Or you may say that Metallurg uses three forwards?

- No, I may not say it. This season our coaches use one pronounced central forward. Why? It is the question to our coach. I clear realize my role – I have to lure our adversaries. I am not jealous as player: let Kingsley, Mkhitaryan, Tanasa score goals … I don't care! The important for me is the fact that Metallurg will kick goals.

- Can you compare the level of championships of Cyprus, UAE, where you played, and of Premier League of Ukraine?

- No, I can not, because they are incomparable. As day and night.

- Who invited you to Ukraine?

- To be honest, I do not know and I think that I should not know it. It is not my duty (laughs). It is possible that coaches of Metallurg were searching for a forward and they found me.

- How did you react to it?

- I was happy. For player who played in Cyprus it was a tempting possibility. I new well the clubs as Dynamo and Shakhtar and I understood that my team could be a good rival for them.

- Nikolay Kostov who had worked in Cyprus had time to study your potential? Is his style of play close to you?

- Every coach has his methods and the biggest part of them is based on discipline and player must obey it. Like you it or no.

- Everything was good in your team up to the middle of the August. But then you received a stroke of misfortune …
- Even two strokes. Firstly, Metallurg did not enter the group stage of European League and it confused all the team. Secondly I was injuries at one of our trainings (club doctors said that Mguni had hemarthros of his left knee joint and an injury of meniscus. - Comment М.С.) and I had to recover my health for a long time. It was vexing that I let down my team.

- Is any guilt from your side in it?

- One on hand, it is an ordinary accident. On the other hand, coaches had to beat their head with the fact who would play on my position.

- Did you receive an injury like this before in your sport life?

- On a large scale, I did not receive it. There is only one exception – it was breaking a leg when I was 18. Fortunately it did not break my career.

- Kostov said on press conference after the match against Obolon that Mguni was not in his best shape …

- I agree. But we should make everything clear. My injury was too grave, I recovered my health more than one day and I did not force it because in general people don not trifle with this. Can you imagine how happy I was after a warm welcome by my partners after my last visit to Dermany. They were content that we could train together; I was content because I could help my team. Tactically I am ready; I have chances to score in every match, but my physical and psychological training does not satisfy 100%. Especially it concerns my morale. I am overcautious on the field, careful not to come into collision, not always shoot the works. And I do it because only one cause: subconsciously I am concerned about my injury. I need time to forget this nuisance and you will see former Mguni.

- Vasyl Pryyma, your young partner, said in one of his recent interview: «When Mguni recovers his health, no one can stop him! »

- It is pleasant to hear such words, but I am not obsessed with it. On a large scale I am new player of this team. And there is a language barrier, but I try to show the main thought to players: play should play football not for money’s sake but in order to pass on a higher level. Today you play in Metallurg, tomorrow in Dynamo or in Shakhtar and later in the national team of your country. Every play should have his dream and everyone should understand that it is accomplishable.

- After the defeat from Obolon you had a meeting with your supporters? How did you spend it?

- Good. I think that the relations between football players and supporters should exist not only at the stadium but also beyond it. Fans gave us to understand what they were waiting from us in this season and we promised to do everything in order not to disappoint them.

- You mentioned about a language barrier. Do you try to overcome it?

- I have a great wish but unfortunately I have no time. I think that in the nearest future I will study language with teacher in order not only to understand something said by my partners but also to speak Russian. But now I manage with simple words as «khorosho» and «spasibo».

- As I understand you do not have problems with English practice?

- You are right. Not only foreign but also some Ukrainian players speak English. Checher speaks English tolerably, Volovyk speaks distinctly enough. But more than with others I communicate on English with Danilovskyy not counting Sunny Kingsley who helped me at first.
- What do you prefer doing when you have a free time?

- It depends on my mood. After unsuccessful matches I prefer to be alone. But not because I am ashamed. I just want to think over alone. But sometimes my clubmates come to me and say me cheerfully: «Hey, Musa, let’s have a walk! ».  In that case sometimes I accept it: for example, I go to Japanese to take sushi. 80 % of free time I spend at home. I do not have my own family as you now and my parents live in Africa.

- Can you tell something about football development in your country? Before you had come to Ukraine, to tell the truth, I knew only one football player from Zimbabwe  - it was a famous goalkeeper from FC Liverpool  Bruce Grobbelaar…

- You know, in the past Zimbabwe was country rich enough but political events of recent years made people forget about luxury and riches. For many people football is the only relaxation. Coming to my country I see that there are a lot of talented boys there but only some of them manage to leave Zimbabwe. Many our players play in Republic of South Africa, some luckies play in Europe. May be you remember our famous player Peter Ndhlovu who played in English Premier League more than 10 years and Benjamin Mwaruwari plays eve now in Manchester City.

- Your height is рост 196 cm but your weight is only 80 kg. Do not you want to put on weight?

- Of course I want. But my nature does not provide me with ample opportunity. It is my physique - it is too difficult for me to gain some kilos. Many people jokes: you had to play basketball with your height but you have not enough of muscle bulk.

- Are there cases when defenders offend you?

- Yes, there are. For example, I am very annoyed when one snatches up my shirt and referees do not see it. I confess that sometimes in such cases I want to take the law in my own hands but I keep my emotions when I recollect that football and boxing are incompatible.

- What do you do in such situation?

- I run away. I mean from defenders. A speed is my element and my partners now it. I do not like receive ball in legs but I prefer receive it on the run. And in this case it will be the hardest time for defenders of course if they can not foresee my actions. If I had figure of Didier Drogba I would play another football. For me the style of play of Michael Owen and Filippo Inzaghi is closer.

- What do you think about Dnipro?

- I always respect any rival. Dnipro is not Dynamo or Shakhtar but it is also a very strong team. I keep in mind well our first meeting in this season; it was a drawn game. But now we need a victory. Our position in the League table obliges us to win three points. We must extricate ourselves from the hole in which Obolon lowered us.

- It will be not easy…

- I now but we must show that Metallurg is the team of fighters. Then our chances will increase.
